Lake Norman Monster Sighting
Unnamed Cove – 2014-11-25
Sighting Reported By:

Midland, ON, Canada
Sighting:
What you have is a breeding population of alligator gar! They attain lengths of 10 plus feet, weigh up to 300 plus pounds, have an alligator type head/appearance, regularly come to the surface to gulp air (modified swim bladder)…it’s that obvious folks!
Dear Unnamed Cove:
Alligator gar are not found in lakes – they only occur in rivers that flow into the Gulf of Mexico but nice try!
Long-nose Gar maybe. Local fisherman report catches:

I lived on the lake for years. My dad and I would constantly go fishing, and we each have caught two gars in the years of us living there. There ARE alligator gars in Lake Norman.
You are absolutely WRONG!
We’ve owned property on Lake Normal since the lake was built and I have personally seen LARGE schools of alligator gar swimming under our pier, usually in the early spring. I guess they are spawning.
About the largest I’ve personally seen in the lake was about 4 feet long, but I have no doubt there are larger ones
Alligator gars do appear in lakes. I have seen them and they are commonly reported in lakes.
Just like piranhas can only be found in the amazon, right? So explain to me why there have been documented and proven accounts of them being caught in lakes and rivers in north America? Because people turn them loose in places they arent native to.
We do have alligator gar in Lake Norman but they seldom grow larger than 3 or 4 feet. It’s unlikly that we have a monster in our lake, but it’s also unlikely that every sighting of the monster can be shrugged off as just being a gar…
Over eight years ago my ex had moved down onto the lake from Boston and he caught a gar.. They took it in somewhere because they thought they had found a new species lol..
I’m at Midway Marina & as you walk the docks & the light is just right in the spring the Gar must be mating. I’ve seen groups of 3 to 4 Gar swimming together tightly, anywhere from 4′ to 6′ long. I’ve also seen them out on the lake on top of the water, where all you see is their nose & their eyes. They’re here folks!!
I’ve personally caught an alligator gar that was at the very least 8 ft long. Me and my father were jug fishing on norman. Near the long island access. We flopped him in the boat before we realized what it was. They’re very common actually and nocturnal, swimming right underneath the surface at night.
