Sighting:
I was paddle boarding in my cove and saw a 6-8 foot dark figure just below the surface, about 10 feet from shore. A few parts were barely above water and then all of sudden it splash and went under water. I could not quite describe what i just saw…was it a school of fish, birds diving, a person diving, etc. Five minutes later I’m back at my dock and see the same creature breach the surface of the water close by. Now my second guessing myself has me asking, “What is going on? What did i just see? A monster?”
After having read your experience and reading through other people’s on this website and others. You most likely saw a giant Catfish or some type of Gar. It is debated whether or not Alligator Gar are in the lake as officially they are not listed, though many fisherman claim to have caught them. As they can grow up to 6-10 feet long. However, it is a known fact that there are Longnose Gar in the lake. Yet they grow only up to around 4 feet.
In my opinion there are Alligator Gar in Lake Norman. I believe the many fishermen who have said they have caught them. And because of the environment and warm waters near the duke plant, I believe they have been able to grow up to their full size of 6-10 feet.
Hope this helps!
